April Showers Bring Beautiful May Flowers

The hills, fields, trails and more are alive with wildflowers!

As many in Central Texas know, the Texas bluebonnet, Texas Indian paintbrush, firewheel and more are putting on a vibrant show this spring. Not only are the wildflowers a delight to see in passing, but also can provide inspiration for your own garden in your Brookfield community.

The first week in May is National Wildflower Week. If you haven’t yet, a visit to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is a must. The Center offers guided garden tours, exhibits and “Tuesday Twilights,” which means “more hours for flowers.” A range of adult classes are also available.

Since 1982, the Center has been educating residents and visitors about native plants. Brookfield homeowners may find the online directory of suppliers particularly helpful. They can search for businesses that sell native plants or seeds as well as those that provide professional landscape or consulting services.

When should you plant native Texas wildflowers? The Center recommends in the fall — no later than mid-November. This includes the beloved bluebonnets.

Other local organizations are also celebrating all things wildflowers this month.

The Elizabet Ney Museum will host a free Wildflower Awareness Week Celebration on Saturday, May 4, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (304 E. 44th St., Austin, Texas 78751). As part of “Art in Hyde Park,” Plein Air Austin members will paint the beautiful grounds all morning and be ready to show visitors their art beginning at 2 p.m.

May 4-5, the Thinkery will offer “The World of Wildflowers.” Children ages 4 and older will get to step into the Think Labs and explore pollinators, dissect flowers and create spring-related art.

May these wildflower-focused events and information inspire you to grow wildflowers in your own backyard. As Lady Bird Johnson once said, “Wildflowers are the stuff of my heart!”
