Brookfield Cares in Southern California

Though creating communities is the core of our work and the essence of our corporate culture, our commitment to community extends beyond that. We care deeply about the areas in which we work and believe in giving back in any way we can. Our Brookfield SoCal team passionately embraces the cause with enthusiasm, personal ownership, and pride.

Throughout the year, the SoCal team volunteers through our corporate philanthropy program, Brookfield Cares, which aims to make a positive contribution to the communities where we operate. Our goal is to use both our financial and human resources to help enrich the lives of those in need within our community with a focus on four areas: homelessness, youth & education, health & wellness, and the environment.

2022 has been a busy year of volunteering for our SoCal team, and there’s plenty more ahead!

Brookfield SoCal team volunteering at the Habitat for Humanity Playhouse Build

In April, the team participated in the Habitat for Humanity Playhouse Build in Anaheim. This unique event brings together OC corporations, organizations, service groups, and churches to build up to 20 playhouses for children. Together, our team designed, built, painted, and decorated a fun Lego themed playhouse which won “Most Creative Playhouse Build.” A selected number of playhouses were chosen for a silent auction and the remainder were gifted to deserving families and organizations in Orange County.

Brookfield SoCal volunteering on Earth Day

With Earth Day in April, it was the perfect time to give back and focus on the environment. Our San Diego team jumped right in and got down and dirty volunteering at the San Diego River Park Foundation River Clean-Up. Our Orange County team got together and cleaned up the beach to reduce litter, protect our ocean, and raise awareness about plastic pollution. We love when we can help keep our Earth a little greener.

June was also a busy month for our team with two very special events – boxing food for Feeding San Diego and HomeAid Orange County’s Essential Diaper Drive. Feeding San Diego has an ambitious goal of ending hunger in San Diego County through food rescue and relies on those who can donate their time to the cause. This year, our team helped complete 260 boxes of food to be given out at various distribution sites throughout San Diego.

HomeAid OC’s Essential Diaper Drive is one of the team’s favorite events and we proudly participate each year. This community-based donation drive aims to collect one million essential items (diapers, wipes, and baby food) for babies and toddlers experiencing homelessness in our community. Through Builders for Babies, homebuilders throughout Southern California construct tiny houses made out of diaper boxes in a friendly competition to bring awareness to the growing need families have for essential baby items. At the end, all diapers used to construct the houses were donated to homeless shelters in Orange County and the Inland Empire. This year, our team had a fun twist on the build and created an amazing pirate ship!

Brookfield SoCal Volunteering at A Child's Dream Annual Back to School Giveaway

In August, our team participated in “A Child’s Dream” Annual Back to School Event. This extension of the “Living Waters – West L.A.” nonprofit helped to provide necessary resources for children to become healthy and responsible citizens in their communities. The Back to School Event provided over 800 children (K-12) with free backpacks, school supplies, personal hygiene products as well as shoes and haircuts.

There’s more planned for the remainder of the year with another team favorite: the Annual Santa Visit & Toy Drive for the Boys & Girls Club of Anaheim/Cypress. The team will purchase toys, gift wrap them in a fun event at the corporate office, and distribute them to the kids. Kids not only receive a toy and holiday treats, but a visit and picture with our resident Santa as well.

In addition to event participation, we maintain ongoing support for Habitat for Humanity, work as the Builder Captain for House of Ruth, and host mock interviews for young job seekers to help practice their skills and build confidence in their job search.

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” – Helen Keller

We know that collectively we are able to maximize our outreach efforts and make a significant difference throughout the community. We strongly encourage our team members to volunteer and donate by offering paid time off to volunteer and 1:1 donation matching to our team member’s charity of choice.

We’ve always been community-focused, passionate about doing the right thing, and giving back. Through Brookfield Cares, we have the opportunity to show up as one Brookfield team and make an even greater impact in the community by working together.
