DIY Father’s Day Gifts from the Heart

June 04, 2019
Son giving Dad a gift in Toronto, Ontario at Brookfield Residential.

With Father’s Day coming up soon (on Sunday, June 16th), it’s the perfect time to start thinking about how to show the fathers in your life some love. The ideal gift is creative, unique and easy enough to DIY that kids can help. And there’s nothing like a gift that’s made just for him to make Dad feel extra special.

Here are some DIY gifts that kids will love to make as much as Dad will love to receive them:

DIY Gifts for Dad’s Favourite Hobby

What does Dad love to do best? Get creative by making a craft related to one of his favourite hobbies. If he’s a fishing enthusiast, you could make a DIY fishing lure, a pocket-sized fishing rod or a mini tackle box. These DIY projects vary in difficulty, from kid-friendly (the mini tackle box) to a bit more complex (the pocket-sized fishing rod). Even better, after completing your craft, you could treat Dad out to a day fishing together!

Is Dad an avid backyard BBQ’er? Make him a customized cooking apron, a grill set holder or funky beverage holders to keep his drink cold. Get creative to include fabrics, messages and motifs customized to his style and interests. Making his BBQing experience more fun, functional and personalized will be sure to make him grin.

If Dad’s a sports lover, consider making a fun craft that combines his love of sports with another of his hobbies or passions. Baseball fan and avid reader? Try making these DIY baseball bookends! Sports enthusiast and wine connoisseur? Check out these unique vintage trophy wine stoppers. Or does Dad love both golf and a visit to the art gallery? Consider creating something original and eye-catching, like this unique modern art piece made out of golf balls.

Want something that’ll last a bit longer and that he can use on the grill or to customize his own kitchen creations? Try making this hot pepper oil or a homemade hot sauce, DIY taco seasoning or a homemade rib rub. Get inventive by using spices, herbs and flavours that you know Dad loves the best.

If Dad has a sweet tooth, turn to baking instead and try making some easy microwave caramels with sea salt (a great recipe for little kids, as they’re very simple to make), epic brownies for chocolate lovers or fun Father’s Day cupcakes “suited” to Dad. Yum!
