In the summer of 2007, Brookfield
Residential Services Ltd. teamed up with Habitat for Humanity (York Region) to
construct the inside of a brand new townhouse being built in Newmarket. The home
is part of a 68 unit condominium townhouse development being built by Rodeo Fine
Homes near Yonge St. and Mullock Dr. Over a period of nine weeks, 100 Brookfield
employees, working in teams of 6, descended upon the townhouse to apply their
skills and enthusiasm to everything from insulation, electrical, plumbing, and
HVAC installation to drywalling, painting, deck building, sandwich-making and
coffee-fetching in order to complete the home for a very deserving family.
Our property managers, administrators,
accounting staff, family member and even a few condominium directors donated
approximately 200 person days of labour to complete the home’s interior. Our
staff worked a 2-day shift consisting of either a Friday and Saturday or a
Sunday and Monday. The staff donated a weekend day and Brookfield donated the
corresponding weekday.
The Brookfield-Habitat project was
unique in that it is the first time that a single company has partnered with
Habitat for Humanity (York Region) to provide such extensive participation.
Never before has a company committed to undertake a complete home build by
providing both the labour and all of the materials. For the expertise and
supplies, Brookfield contacted its network of preferred contractors and
suppliers. Their response was incredibly enthusiastic and generous. Our
contractor-partners contributed insulation, drywall, paint, all electrical and
plumbing supplies and fixtures, the furnace, air conditioner and HVAC
installation, all flooring, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, all the trim and
doors, appliances, safety shoes for the volunteers and even generous cash
donations to Habitat. These contributions by our contractors and suppliers, with
an estimated value of $35,000, means that Habitat will have more resources to
devote to other homes.
On behalf of Brookfield and Habitat for
Humanity (York Region), we want to thank the following contractors and suppliers
for partnering with us on this important community project.
